Other issues included the recording media and venues. Reels were mostly used until the late 70's-early 80's, where cassettes were used more often. I once remember Dick Latvala or someone in an interview also talk about how in the early 80's, they were playing some smaller venues that didn't require much reinforcement in the PA of certain instruments, so a 2 track PA tape would be lacking in areas, like quieter vocals or guitars.
Finally, did anyone ever care more about making tape than the Bear???
